Hawaii 2016 – April 21

Pam and I are about to leave for over 2 weeks in Hawaii. We will celebrate Pam’s 50th and her aunt’s 85th while there. We also plan to visit Pam’s cousin Laura. It has been 16 years since they’ve seen each other. I’ll be focusing on naturesound recording, documenting existing and endangered soundscapes. Pam will be photographing.

It’s a big deal. That’s a long time off work for Pam in her mission critical, minimally resourced job. We have cats, fish, and plants to be cared for. Ongoing audio projects will be put on hold.

For last minute drama, Beany falls 12 feet off the banister two days before we leave. I’m not sure exactly what happened, but I heard a loud flail and boom while attempting to take a nap. Maybe Zach knocked him off…grab-assing…as the boys do. Emerging from the bedroom, Beany was hiding from me while the others were demanding food. Very unusual and concerning. I’m freaked out.

20160419_183143Here’s what I found after feeding the boys and calming down the bean. A nasty abrasion but very little active bleeding. We decided to see how he was the next day before taking him in.

It was the right decision. He was bruised, but OK. Whew!

That seems like enough. But it wasn’t. The night before we left, Beany got into a bag of pills that I was packing and ate one of my multivitamins. It was obvious from the shredded bag. I counted. One was missing with just a tiny wet fragment remaining. Every man’s one daily multi 40+….because cats need 5000 IU of vitamin A daily.

An hour and a half later, after talking to poison control, we determined that Beany was probably going to be OK. Maybe some gastrointestinal issues. Great. Fortunately, our pet sitter is a vet tech and keeps a close eye on things. Now back to packing…

I didn’t mention that Pam scratched her eye while trimming a lilac tree a few days before we left. Unfortunately I don’t have a picture to share. It was quite nasty and she needed a doctor’s visit and Rx eyedrops. It took well over a week to clear up. Could have been much worse.

Tomorrow we leave for Maui…
